Coffee, Girlfriend, Fluffiness!

There are few drinks quite as nice as chocolate coffee, and none of those are available to me right now, so I’m making the best of my night by having some. It’s a perk of the job here to be able to make a fresh pot and then have a break with a steaming combo of hot chocolate mix and coffee. I don’t have coffee all that often, but a savour it when I do.

I’ve also been savouring my time with Gwen, who is wonderful beyond words. We gel on so many levels, but it’s still constantly surprising to me to discover new things we appreciate about each other. Watching Firefly, my new favourite TV show, playing board games (clothed and not), and cuddling have been so very nice. And I can’t complain about having a silly grin on my face half the time, but I’m sure other people are sick of it. Having a fantastic girlfriend is terribly nice.

Why use segues? Because they fall into place!

Today I learned that Matthew Sweet’s Girlfriend has been remastered and reissued with the rare Good Friend disc as a bonus. The album was the second of Matthew’s many superb recordings that I fell in love with, after 100% Fun hooked me in ’95. Girlfriend has been lauded as one of the finest albums of the 90’s, and I wouldn’t hesitate to agree. Expert songcraft, blissful melodies, ear-soothing harmonies, raging guitar and an exciting range of sound make this a true classic. Though Matthew has produced a body of work that is worth experiencing every corner of, this is undeniably his most accessable and immediate album. It’s a perfect place to dive in, especially with the richer sound and extra tracks now offered.

Oh, and Tuesday Weld, my favourite actress, graces the cover of Girlfriend. I have that cover to thank for introducing me to her, which also endears the album to me. I think some of us should hunt down a copy of Pretty Poison soon. In it, one of Tuesday’s lines, referring to sex, is, “You know, when grown-ups do it, it’s kind of dirty. That’s because there’s no one to punish them.”

Fluffy is a marvelous word. Seeing that entry reminds me that I really should join Zaadz.

Our Mission. That’s easy. We’re gonna change the world. Our math goes like this: you be the change + you follow your bliss + you give your greatest strengths to the world moment to moment to moment + we do everything in our power to help you succeed + you inspire and empower everyone you know to do the same + we team up with millions like us = we just affected billions = we (together) changed the world.
The Plan. Ours involves Capitalism. Spirituality. Enthusiasm. Love. Service. Inspiration. Leaders. People CRAZY enough to think they can change the world. And courageous enough to do something about it. And committed enough to stick to it when they feel like giving up.
The quick version of what we’re gonna do: build THE most inspired community of people in the world… Imagine social networking with a purpose, a community of seekers and conscious entrepreneurs circulating wisdom and inspiration and wealth and all that good stuff. Fun fun fun.

I’ve been meaning to do so for weeks now, so it’s going up on my list of 43 Things I will do. Zaadz is a friend of I-I, so it is top notch fluffiness, to be sure.

  1. I'm right behind you on fluffiness, but I'd respectfully point out that the only way to save the world is to replace capitalism(the private ownership of social production for the profit of the rich)by libertarian socialism(direct action for a stateless society, based on decentralization and federation, common ownership and self-management,where all will be free and equal.)See Chomsky. 🙂

  3. While I do find there to be a lot of merit in libertarian and socialist thought, I think that expecting a wholesale change of that sort is quite unrealistic. Keep in mind that my own political tendencies favour social democracy, so I do sympathize with your position. The work Zaads is attempting is in the present and at present capitalism is the game being played, so it makes sense to work with that set of parameters rather than waste energy struggling in futile ways.

My take how to save the world is to make the spiral of human development as easy and healthy for people to ascend through as possible, making for larger populations of genuinely world-centric people. With people coming from those higher stages of moral development, the system they are in matters less than the actions they are driven to undertake. As businesses increasingly become run by compassionate and wise people, we will see and have seen wonderful success stories in positively impacting the lives of many.

  5. Capitalism? The expansion of exploitation? Spiritual? Just one point of how capitalism works. Apply it to just one situation. Does a drug company profit more from a drug that cures or one that treats a disease? So long as profit is mans motive the art of exploiting others will grow in ever more cunning ways. Go capitalists! Go! Preferably to another planet you can exploit after you ruin this one.
