Desktop-Desktop

Work spaces, whether digitalspace or realspace, are an area of our lives I have a particular curiosity about, so when I stumbled upon NowNow‘s desktop//desktop project my interest was drawn in.
Before we begin. Desktop-Desktop is a project that explores how we construct our work environments both digitally and physically. The idea is simple. We ask people to submit a screen-grab of their computer’s desktop, as well as a photo of their actual desk taken from where they normally sit. Let’s not get too theoretical and take all the fun out just yet. At this point, just let desktop-desktop remind you that despite our daily use of computers we are still human.

It’s simply a collection of pieces showcasing the computer desktops and physical desktops of designers, but I find this voyeurism very telling about how we work and our general approach to life. Do we embrace chaos or order? Are we focused or scattered? Are we playful or all work? What’s important to us even as we work? Do we really love tribbles?

Take my own workspace as an example. Can you tell I’m a minimalist from the start? I prefer a clean, comfortable, efficient and beautiful environment, and aside from needing some aesthetic adjustments for my realspace, I think I achieve that. In my Ubuntu-running laptop I keep things clean by having no icons on my desktop. I keep a desk that has only the items I’m always going to be using while keeping other things handy. I’m always sitting on the silver exercise ball, which helps with my posture and, along with the small weight to the left, lets me get in some exercise when I have a moment.

What is your workspace like?

  1. My workspace consists of a desk haphazardly built, half held together with string, for my computer, and a crafting table on the other side, covered with paint and papers, glue, paintbrushes, tape, and whatever else I happened to pul out of drawers for my last project. There's a chair in the middle to swivel between. My workspace is VERY chaotic.
